Nominated by the Soroptimist International – Northern Ireland Region:

Isobel Holmes taught chemistry, becoming senior House Mistress and co-ordinating Careers Education in her school before retirement in 1989.  Since then she has served on various Boards of Governors.  A committed member of the Soroptimists International for over 50 years she used her passion and drive for many local and international causes.  Actively involved with the Church of Ireland at various levels.  She became secretary of the first branch of UNIFEM the United Nations Development fund for Women for Women and then the Northern Ireland representative on the UK Board.  Her work with Talking Newspapers was recognised by the award of an MBE for services to visually impaired people.  Isobel gives unstintingly of her time to many causes and has been both an inspiration to many and a pioneer throughout.

Nominated by the Mothers’ Union

Roberta McKelvey graduated from Queen’s and was a teacher and Head of Department.  As a member of the Mothers’ Union for 46 years she served for 12 years as a Trustee for Worldwide Mothers’ Union.  She assisted in introducing a Literacy and Development Programme in the Sudan and went on to encourage and evaluate the Programme.  Roberta represented Mothers’ Union and the Church of Ireland on a range of bodies as well as serving as a founder member and Secretary of the Central Belfast Child Contact Centre.  She has promoted the role of women internationally, at United Nations level where among other things she made representations to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.  Throughout she has inspired others around her.
