In his role as Pro-Chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast, Dr Gibson plays a key position in the governance of the University. He is Chairman of the Planning and Finance Committee which oversees the financial and business matters of the organisation, serves on the Investment Committee and advises on investments within Queen's knowledge transfer company, QUBIS Ltd.

Describing himself as a "realist who believes in people", Dr Gibson is a graduate of Queen's and Loughry Agricultural and Dairy College. After a period in sales, marketing and management with Richardsons' Fertilisers and various divisions of ICI, he was appointed Chairman and MD of ICI Ireland Ltd in 1982, with responsibilities for business of around £150 million.

In 1988 he became Commercial Director of Irish Fertiliser Industries Ltd for four years before being employed as Managing Director UK of Golden Vale PLC, responsible for a staff of 750 and a turnover of £250 million.

He retired in 1999, but continues to be involved in business as Chairman of The Foyle Meat Group Ltd and Wilson's Country Ltd and a Director of Independent News & Media (NI). His community activities include Chairmanship of The Centre for Cross Border Studies and Trustee of The Irish School of Ecumenics and Mediation NI. He is a past Chairman of the NI Region of the Confederation of British Industry and Chairman of the suspended Civic Forum.

He was awarded the OBE in 1989 for his contribution to Anglo-Irish relations and increasing trade from the United Kingdom into Ireland.

He has pleasure in endorsing the work of Women's Forum Northern Ireland.
