Rosemary Rainey OBE

Rosemary was Senior Teacher and Head of English Department in a large secondary school in Belfast prior to retirement in 1995.  Since 2002 she has served as a Board Member of the Belfast Education & Library Board, chairing the Audit & Risk Management Committee and the Teaching Appointments Committee, before becoming Chairperson of the Board in January 2010.

In 2012, Rosemary was awarded the OBE in the Queen's New Year Honours' list  for her services to education in Northern Ireland.

An active trade unionist during her professional life, Rosemary is a former President of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), Northern Ireland Branch.  She was also their Press Officer for 10years prior to her retirement in.

She has wide experience of both public and the voluntary service, especially in the field of education, having served on, inter alia, the Northern Ireland CSE Board, Northern Ireland Council for Educational Development, Northern Ireland Schools' Examinations' Council, Northern Ireland Curriculum Council, the Board of Education of the Methodist Church in Ireland, the Executive of the Transferors' Representative Council (TRC) and the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland(GTCNI).


A University graduate, Rosemary is a writer and a public speaker with an interest in advancing the cause of women, especially paying tribute to all who serve in a voluntary capacity while seeking no personal advancement. Her interests include gardening, motoring, writing, people and Church work.
