Sadie’s chosen career was teaching. She spent all her working years as a Teacher and Principal in primary education.  As such she became involved in many aspects of education and teacher politics.


During her teaching career she was a member of Ulster Teachers Union and was elected as President of that Union in 1983.


After she was widowed she became more interested in women’s organisations.  For many years she was a member of Women’s Institute and was founder member of Newtownbreda Business and Professional  Women (UK) and later became N. Ireland President of BPW (UK)

Sadie was a member of Castlereagh Arts Committee from which she resigned when she ceased to live in Castlereagh Council area.


 She was  founder member of Castlereagh Standing Conference and in time became Chairman.  As such she represented Castlereagh Standing Conference on Women’s Forum Northern Ireland.


As Chairman of Women’s Forum Northern Ireland she was their representative on the Women’s National Commission in London.  She represented Women’s Forum  NI at The Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing 1995.  Sadie was a member of the Women’s National Commission for six years.  For her work on their behalf in Northern Ireland she was honoured with a M.B.E. in New Year's Honours in 2000.


For health reasons she gave up membership of several organisations but still continued membership of Business and Professional Women (UK) Ltd., UNIFEM(UK) N. Ireland Branch, church and local organisations in Bangor, including  Probus and Luncheon Club.


She was also involved in fund raising for Ulster Cancer Foundation, Newtownbreda Support Group as well as fund-raising for MacMillan Cancer Care.
