NIWEP celebrates 20th anniversary

Irene Miskimmon welcomed everyone to the conference.
Margaret Owen spoke on the importance of monitoring the Gender Monitoring Checklist.
Margaret is a human rights lawyer and a founder member of GAPS(Gender Action for Peace and Security)She is Director of the lead international NGO focusing on the largely neglected issues of widowhood and widows rights in conflict and non conflict situations.
Fiona Hodgson Chair of GAPS , Board member of the Conservative party and a member of the Conservative Human Rights Commission and President of the Conservative Women's Organisation then spoke on the role of Parliament in Monitoring Policy and the implementation of UN security council Resolution 1315.
Nounou Booto Meeti spoke about the Gender Monitoring Checklist and Women in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nounou is a Congolese journalist and a graduate in judicial and private law.She has actively monitored human rights violations and violence against women in DRC.
Kate McCullough of NIWEP who is responsible for managing NIWEP's strategy on UNSCR1315 then spoke of the local situation, the NI experience and implications.
After coffee there was a group discussion on strategies for the way forward chaired by Liz Law.
As well as the excellent speakers there was a lot of valuable networking taking place both at the conference and at the reception after wards in the City Hall to celebrate 20 years of NIWEP.
